We are proud and honored to announce that we have won the 2020 Illumination Award of Distinction for our GTC Matrix project, the highest level of recognition by the IES Illuminating Engineering Society.⠀
“On behalf of my team and me, I thank the IES members of the jury for recognizing the result of an enormous multidisciplinary effort and hard work that we performed on this project. We are very proud to have accomplished such an extraordinary achievement acknowledged by one of the most prestigious institutions of lighting profession among so many amazing projects.⠀
GTC Matrix is an excellent example of total lighting design and engineering. Light fixture Trick that we designed in 2014, which became a paradigm in graphic lighting was then uniquely customized, together with the control system and wiring, for this particular project. Now that customized product became a standard that can be used in countless ways and possibilities. Designing lighting instruments, implementing them in an unexpected way but also convincing the client GTC Group and iGuzzini manufacturers to trust and work with us, demonstrates the strengths of innovation and creativity of the team but most significantly the importance of lighting as the creator of nocturnal landmark architecture.” commented Dean Skira the receipt of this distinguished Award.⠀

Istria County has declared its victory over COVID-19, and therefore on Saturday night, the major roundabout in the city of Pula was illuminated in light blue, the symbolic colour of the fight against this infectious disease. The local coronavirus crisis management team stated that there were no more patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in that Croatian county which was declared a corona-free zone. Since the start of the epidemic, there have been 87 patients who have caught this novel virus and all of them, but two elderly citizens who died due to this infection recovered until Saturday.

Technological disruption changed the way we think about lighting and lighting design, but did we forget what we’ve learned in the last 100 years. When will product design and production begin with the word ‘quality’ and not ‘price’? Whose fault is it? Attend this webinar presented by Dean Skira who will force us to think hard on such topics.
This talk is actually not about answers, it’s about questions which new generations should ask themselves at the beginning of their careers and maybe one day be the leaders of the profession and not followers.
Dean Skira will hold a lecture on 25th October 2019 as a confirmed speaker at the PLDC convention in Rotterdam.

One of the bridges, the green railway bridge is very special for the citizens. A long time ago some brave graffiti artist who happened to be fans of Jimmy Hendrix wrote HENDRIX on the center of the 300-meter long supporting steel beam about 30 meters above the river. Since then the Green Bridge it has been called the Hendrix Bridge. The idea was to enhance the steel structure using linear white light, following the form of the beams or columns. Simply light that shows its existence at night. But when the train approaches, a radar registers the moving machine and the lighting of the bridge shut down. The bridge disappears. The train becomes the protagonist and the central moving object. RGB reflectors carefully positioned to light up both sides of the train switch on. Colored light follows the train and once the train is gone, all the colors disappear and the simple white light illuminates the green bridge again. The colorful dynamic light can be seen by chance or if you follow the train schedule. The lighting effect was designed to emphasize the main function of this bridge, which is the railroad traffic.

Polesano pole developed with Delta Light was launched on 23rd November in London.
Polesano is the result of the first collaboration between Delta Light and Dean Skira. The goal was to develop a new lighting concept designed specifically for urban settings, whether it is a pedestrian pathway, roadway, park, square, façade or landscape. The concept needed to provide maximum flexibility for the designer while maintaining the same aesthetic for the entire system, regardless of the area.

Dean Skira held his lecture at 10:15, for a fresh start of the Saturday edition at the #PLDC Convention. Find out more about transillumination (lighting for transportation structures and designing structures that transport light) and its meanings in contemporary lighting for infrastructural projects.
The city of Mantua, situated on the far side of the Po, built in the middle of a marshland lake has its own Palazzo del Te. The palace was built on an island in 1524 by the famous architect Giulio Romano, in the manneristic spirit of the XVI century. It was envisioned as a suburban villa for pleasure and relaxation for the Marquess of Mantua Federico II Gonzaga modeled on Roman villa Farnesina, back then it was surrounded by water. This fine example of the mannerist style is decorated with numerous works of art and a part of the Palazzo today is a museum which contains a collection of Mesopotamian art.
The lighting installation TWISTED is created as a site-specific object which is enhanced with RGB lines integrated into the supporting structure of the pavilion. This installation is experimenting with people’s perception of movement and their sense of space while walking through unusual spiral surfaces. The shape of the object, the lighting and the haze are the key elements which influence the spatial orientation making this walk an unique experience.
Together with Mark Major (Speirs+Major, UK), Rafael Gallego (Aureolighting) and Claudia Paz (Claudia Paz Lighting Studio) Dean Skira attended the first Peruvian international lighting design conference Arquitectura y Luz arquitecturayluz.com. The conference was held on 8th and 9th June at the University of Lima in Peru.
The biggest roundabout in Croatia has a surface area of 15,000 square meters and it marks the main entrance to the City of Pula. Obviously, because of its size this turned out to be a very unusual infrastructural project. The object of illumination was clearly missing, and simply placing regular poles for street lighting purposes was not a satisfactory solution for this project – an architectural construction needed to be invented for the purpose of lighting. This roundabout is, in fact, an efficient rainwater drainage system so it was only natural to include water as one of the main elements besides light in the project solution. The drivers and pedestrians mainly see the outer ring so the aesthetics were based on an elegant, circular construction of 340 white poles, a sort of crown that releases water vapor collected in this drainage system, which is then colored by light beams of all nuances and intensities creating a spectacular sight.

Polesano is a very new concept in lighting instruments developed with Delta Light designed specifically for urban setting being a pedestrian pathway, vehicle street, park, square or landscape. It provides total flexibility for designer or specifier to create his own set of different optics according to a specific area by keeping the same aesthetics of the entire system. Its modularity and flexibility ask for personal involvement of the designer to create his unique set of luminaires or other elements within the existing form of this “device”. Integrating video surveillance, Wi-Fi, speakers or some other IoT unit is a next step in the development of Polesano.

The use of light and illumination in architecture and design is currently evolving and making an increasingly significant impact in various creative disciplines. Today, architects use light installations to create a different night-time identity for buildings that allow for additional functions and presentations. Light is also important for designers who use it to illuminate locations, or conjure works of art, forms and images in commercial or cultural contexts. In short: light is a magical medium for creative experimentation that today’s designers are using to produce a broad spectrum of exciting work.
