The Učka Tunnel, a vital connection between the Istrian region and mainland Croatia, has reached a significant milestone. On 13th September 2024, the completion of the second tube was celebrated with a grand opening ceremony, attended by many government officials, including Croatia’s Prime Minister. Skira Lighting Design had the honor of illuminating both the administrative building on one side and the newly crafted tunnel entrance on the other.

Dean Skira and his team embraced this opportunity, going beyond the traditional role of lighting design. In addition to designing the lighting, they conceived a striking corten steel curtain wall, evoking the red, dry earth so characteristic of the Istrian landscape. The administrative and control building is bathed in light through projectors that simulate ten different scenarios, reflecting the four seasons as well as the region’s iconic winds, the Bura and Jugo, and winter snowfalls. These lighting scenes will automatically or manually transition each evening until midnight—or 10 p.m. during the winter months, to align with the rhythm of the surroundings and weather conditions.

The Freedom to Push the Boundaries
Lighting the Way through the Mountains with the Strength of Art and Steel
Bina Istra, along with the French company Bouygues, entrusted Skira’s team with the freedom to push the boundaries of creativity. Their vision has resulted in a project that not only enhances the functionality of the tunnel but also reflects the spirit of the region. The lighting scenes will change with the seasons, creating a dynamic experience for the millions of passengers who will pass through the tunnel for years to come. This design will endure, standing as long as the tunnel itself, merging technology with the timeless beauty of nature.
“The collaboration with Skira added an invaluable dimension to the entire project. The integration of the corten steel sculpture and lighting transformed the tunnel into a remarkable experience. It was a pleasure to have them on the team; together, we achieved an extraordinary result that will stand the test of time." ”
